I started a new job and it is very fast paced. It's a convenience store/kitchen/cafe. The owner pinches pennies by reusing things that shouldn't be reused like zip lock baggies and those lil card board boats you put fried food in to display in the hot box at the counter. We use the same boats every day. Also we are advised to use only one pair of those flimsy disposable gloves throughout the day.
Another way they pinch pennies is to keep the labor low. They usually have one person in the morning, sometimes 2. It doesn't usually get too busy then. But the afternoon/evening shift is the busiest and there is always one person working thru 2 rushes; at 3pm, when school let's out and 5pm, dinner rush, which can sometimes last for hours depending on how hungry ppl are that day. Then they have someone come in near closing to help clean so it doesn't take too many hours after closing. But the chore list is so long it usually ends up taking a few hours. Which pisses the owners off.
Anyways, my first few days working there I've had to cover a few co-workers shifts who call in, due to low moral and everyone being overworked and exhausted. A few times I worked 11 to 12 hour shifts and never had a chance to breathe let alone take a break or eat something. I was concerned about the lack of break time in that place, caused by the fact that only a single person was there most of the shift and the work load was so heavy once help arrived at night.
So I googled the law in my state for the standard break time for a 12 hour shift. And guess what? The isn't one. It says there is no law requiring break time for businesses operating in oklahoma even for a 12 hour shift. More specifically it said, that its in order not to put “undue hardship on a businesses ability to run smoothly”
I asked, How does working your butt off for 12 hours straight with no food not put “undue hardship” on an employee?! Smh…
