I'll keep this short as possible. I worked at Papa John's for 13+ years. I was a GM for the past 6. I put blood, sweat, and tears into that company. So, obviously this past year with the “labor shortage” we haven't had many employees, and I've been doing allll the work, running doubles (13 hour shifts) back to back most of the week. This past Tuesday I was scheduled to work 10-5, and I had just worked doubles the 3 days prior. Well, of course the person who was supposed to cover the evening shift calls out on Monday. I let my boss know that I had something extremely important to do after work, and there was absolutely no way I could cover that evening shift. He tells me would try his best to find someone. Tuesday comes, and around noon I call my boss to see if they found anyone, he tells me no. I tell him a really need to leave at 5 and he said he's working on it. So 430 comes around and it's obvious that nobody is coming. The reason I needed to leave is because my father, who is 65 and lives alone, had asked me to grab his medicine from the Walgreens by him because he had been feeling unwell. He lives about an hour away from me, and with me working so much, I hadn't been out to see him much. He usually does everything himself so him actually asking me for a favor definitely worried me. So, long story short, I closed the store down by 5 (we close at 8 on Tues) and took care of what I had to.
Well, the next morning, I was promptly fired. No write up, no warning, nothing. They didn't even ask for an explanation. I've worked 50+ hour weeks there for the past 13 years, and they let me go like I was nothing. I'm not gonna rant on here about how I was the absolute best employee, but I did my job very well and it's crazy that I was even okay with running a store with no employees the way I was. Needless to say, the reason I posted this here is because they want to talk about a labor shortage, but these companies are still letting anybody and everybody go. They don't care what you have going on, how long you've been with the company, they simply DON'T CARE! I'm sure the 3 hours of sales missed was worth firing me over though, after 13 years of service.
(Edit)
This happened back in early December and I've been trying to stay optimistic, but I still haven't received any unemployment because Colorado has a 12 week waiting period right now. I'd be homeless if it wasn't for rental assistance. I'm currently looking for a new job but it's rough, especially since PJs was basically my only job since I was a teenager. I feel like I can't even trust any employer after what happened to me. I'm not one to ask for handouts but if anybody can help me in any way I'd be appreciative, just message me. Thanks ️
