It's time to take back our lives back, demand what's ours; or we start murdering the rich until we get it.
This isn't asking for much, this is basic living costs adjusted for inflation.
Crunch the Numbers: Average rent for a 1bdrm apartment in the US currently costs ~$1,100 a month; $20 x 160 = $3,200 a month; the 1/3 rule for income/rent affordability puts you at $1,066 before taxes; after taxes you're only at ~$2,500 a month, meaning you can only afford $850 for rent; just a little less than enough to afford a room in a shared apartment for most major US cities.
a $20 minimum wage is really just asking for the bare minumum, the ability to reasonably afford a basic room; not a 1 bedroom apartment, but a basic room to share an apartment with in order to avoid being homeless. There shouldn't be any homeless workers on the street, yet today it seems that most US adults who make under this basic qualifying income are living and dying in their cars.
We cannot be shackled to our jobs in fear of losing healthcare, the current model of healthcare has allowed employers to to abuse and keep hostage employees under the threat of loss of the basic dignity of accessing a hospital.
I'm hungry, I'm tired, I'm done with this; and I think it's time for an ultimatum.
