I am not currently employed, but am finishing my masters in engineering. Instead of getting a definitive call that after this coming exam period ALL courses will go back to on-site, the school has decided to erupt a “free for all” for course admins. Which means, one course I attend did the very final lecture on-site, most other lectures are via zoom, but computer labs are on site, some lessons are on-site and others are hybrids, etc. It's a hot mess. I started this thing in the midst of the pandemic, and let me tell you, doing Uni from home has been a BLISS! There's no background noise in narrow corridors, I got plenty of screen space because I tend to keep my old monitors, a decent mic, very good speakers, no commute (about 1 hr by bus normally including transfer, ca 35 km), and no crowded classrooms. Not to…

New sign outside my work
Is it okay to job hop?
Is it okay to job hop for less than a $10,000 raise? I'm currently a legal assistant in Canada, and while I'm good at my job, there's not really any room to grow and there's a definite ceiling as far as salary. I'm already approaching that ceiling and I'm not even in my third year. I've been in my current position for almost a year now. I recently got the chance to interview for a tech company in a role that is very transferable to mine, but more broad and focusing more on the management and operations aspect. So I'm definitely interested to broaden my horizons in that sense. But, we're currently in negotiations for salary. I currently make $52k a year. The budget for the new position is $50-65k a year. They're wanting to go with $55k a year, I'm obviously trying to get the max and hopefully use…
I'm trying to stay positive but this work is very difficult right now.
Will you miss COVID masks after pandemic
Since the new cases have significantly dropped, I only wear them when there is a certain advantage to it . I think I will probably miss wearing masks sometimes. Wbu?
This happened several years ago at my first corporate job after college graduation. Worked with them for 4 years with 2% raises each year except for the first year. I landed a new job that increased my pay 20k more (but they didn’t know that). The account manager conducted an exit interview with me trying to find out why I was leaving and if I would reconsider staying. I read that you should never take the current employer’s counter offer (which would have probably been lower than 20k more anyway) and I kept saying, “I’m sorry, it is for a new opportunity.” Every which way she tried to probe until she said in a condescending and shaming tone, “You are leaving because of money.” And I just said as graciously as I could, “No, it is for a new opportunity.” At that time I should have said, “Yes of course…
I often come to this subreddit for inspiration and solidarity. It's nice to connect with people who have similar views about state of work and the future. Although a lot of us are going through work-related struggles, it's also nice to know I'm not alone. But it would also be great to hear about the experiences of those who have joined the job-free lifestyle. What is it like? What have you done to get there? Probably like a lot of people here, it would be nice to have some inspiration and ideas for next steps in moving forward to a more work-free lifestyle.
This job is going to radicalize me
I’m working at Tim Hortons right now (for the second time, I’m 18 now but I worked here for 9 months when I was 15/16) and it’s my third day on the job. Despite me insisting that I wanted regular training because I worked a different position 2 years ago so I don’t remember how to do everything. They didn’t care and have thrown me into full time work (I asked for part time) with no training. Today it’s just me and my supervisor working and it’s so impossibly busy and I’m so pissed. I’m being paid minimum wage for the jobs of two people,,, why am I not being paid the salary of two people? Why am I expected to be able to run a whole store almost alone on my third day? It makes me laugh because when they hired me they were so relieved. They said they’ve…
We need to dedicate people getting gas once a week or getting the bare minimum to start bringing down prices again.
The company also made it on the Forbes fastest growing companies in 2021. “We have grown considerably and have been very profitable during the last couple of years, so it is difficult to argue that a business model built around working remotely doesn’t work. That said, we have always maintained, and continue to feel, that it is not a sustainable model. There is simply too much good that happens with direct human interaction, and we have always believed that at some point we needed to gravitate back toward a more in-office model. Well, it’s time to start gravitating.”
