Month: March 2022
I just started working for a multi billion dollar Australasian company in the Health industry, which due to the pandemic has seen their share price double since 2020. Today an email circulated to “Everybody” showing off the reward this “hard working” individual had earned by giving him a cake. Seriously, after earning record breaking profits, you reward 1 staff member with a fucking cake. I should also mention that most staff are on $2 above minimum wage. Then they wonder why “People don't wanna work anymore” or “this generation is lazy and entitled”. Rant over.
Seriously though fuck this
Walked in and shook the managers hand.
Walked in to a place, asked if they were hiring, they are desperate they tell me, desperate, they need every position filled. Was a two woman on site, one was the main manager. “No one wants to work!” quipped the second lady. that made me think of this sub, ha. I tell them I have experience in their industry and have full availability. “Interviews are Monday but you'll hear from me before then to schedule one!” It's Monday, haven't heard a peep. Guess I just don't want it bad enough?
To preface this; I am very fortunate enough to live somewhere not terribly affected by the war with Ukraine and Russia. I am very thankful for that and my heart goes out to them. Talking with my fiance today about rising gas prices due to the war. He mentioned his coworker having to drive about an hour to work, meaning he is filling his tank just about every other day. A half tank is $50. They make $18 an hour. With gas prices continuing to rise, are people going to not be able to afford to even go to work? Wages have never reflected the economy, but we have also never seen inflation on this bad of a scale. It feels like just yesterday I was talking with him about how when milk becomes $15 a gallon and minimum wage in my state stays 12.30 people are going to ask…
We need to stop censoring our pay
I see post after post where people have censored how much they make or how much they charge for their services. Or they talk in terms of percentages instead of dollar amounts (like, “my boss offered me a 5% raise” instead of “my boss offered me a $3k raise which would put me at $63k”. If we want to see real, meaningful change around how we view salary, this is the perfect place to abandon the old brainwashing that salary needs to be a secret. Privacy concerns are real and valid. Please don't share if you don't feel comfortable, but I think the best thing we can do for our respective industries is start talking about our salaries. Some guy in AZ might realize he's making $15k less than the average, compared to what others are saying. It would be a good place to start looking into pay disparity (or…
Why is this an acceptable life?
Hi all, I have a PhD in immunology, and study autoimmune diseases at one of the biggest hospital systems in the us. Got my degree at a top medical school here as well. For those that don't know, science has this bullshit position called a postdoc, where you're still considered a trainee after you get your doctorate, but the pay is set at a federal minimum. So, we all get paid ~50k for the first few years after finishing a decade of college education. During that time you work to get funding, in my case a thing called a k award. Well I did. Worked like mad for 3 years, applied, and I got the K. This funds me for 5 years, and then gets me a new position. After being notified about the award, we will have access to the funds connected to it in about 6 months. But…
Why is everything so fast?
Or rather, why does everything have to be so fast*? My boss just called me on my day off to lecture me for 20 minutes about how I’m not moving as fast (I have hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, it affects my connective tissue and if I don’t do things a certain way I dislocate my joints, especially in my back, shoulders, wrists and hands and causes a lot of pain as I’m constantly tensed to keep things from going out of place.) as the other housekeepers, and that I’m not as good as them because I forget things occasionally or I miss something, when literally every other housekeeper at my hotel does too (I’ve helped every single one and they’ve all forgotten way more things than I have, and my rooms are by far the cleanest after I’m done. Not that it’s a contest, just a side statement for context.) Everything,…
