I work at a very small coffee shop. We have three employees: me (20), and two high school students who alternate days and work about three hours after they are done school. I don’t get paid more than the kids I just work longer hours, but that difference has kind of put me in a higher position than them. After all, I am here 8.5 hours a day and have to deal with everything. I have more responsibilities than they do, and have established a relatively regular customer base. I want to make it clear, my job kind of sucks. Legally I am entitled to one unpaid hour-long break each shift as well as two paid 15 minute (at will) breaks. I am never able to take breaks, though I recently negotiated with my boss that if I am not taking the break, he cannot dock it from my pay…

1) third party recruiters are slimey; they created an income based off of middling. Seriously they don’t really do much. Pipe out the same templates and collect 10-20% for doing jack shit work. But they are a pretty face. 2) contract work creates a “I don’t give a fuck attitude” because I won’t see this projects end. Businesses hurt because they have shit work and disloyalty. Employees pick up the slack. Contractors have to balance finish just enough to get paid vs apply like hell to places.
Personally – I’d be thrilled. However, my friend hates wine. She works at a restaurant & they created a mandatory wine tasting for staff to “better understand” the wines they’re serving. I’m fairly confident that he’s required to pay his staff since it’s mandatory, but does he have to pay the full Ohio minimum wage, or can he get away with paying the wage for wait staff (the business will be closed so there’s no tips)? Also – is it even legal to require your employees to consume something they don’t like?
Not sure if anyone has advice, if not, I’m just venting I guess I am trans, and using my employer’s medical coverage for gender affirming top surgery. I am finally seeing the finish line- I have a consult set up. Unfortunately, the consult is in November- the soonest my local surgeon’s office could set up. I am looking in to other options but it’s looking like there’s a chance I will be stuck in this job for up to another year. The area I work in is very toxic. There is constant conflict and the management is constantly making unnecessary changes without seeking feedback from those it affects. The customers are absolute nightmares. The area I am in is incredibly loud and overstimulating for me, making the work draining and sometimes painful. My job does allow for transfer into other areas, however it has been impacting my mental health so…
My work gave me a raise (I think because they could tell I was getting unhappy and didn’t want to lose me) and they said on order for me to get it I had to sign a contract that I wouldn’t talk about it with anyone. They said to avoid any “uproar”… is this normal/legal? Thanks Edit: so I’m getting comments faster than I thought I would be, with a lot of good points. I wanted to add a few things. This is my second-ever job so I had no idea going in what was legal/illegal/normal etc… so I actually signed the contract a month ago or so. I feel like an idiot now. I only found out recently the legalities of this stuff because I found this sub. Also, as for my line of work, it’s healthcare. I work in a doctors office it’s a chain type office, we’re…
I was just having a moment here at work that caused me to want to share a short story about how damaging toxic workplaces really can be. (Writing on mobile, sorry for the format) I, much like the rest of us, have been beat down by the majority of my previous workplaces. I've been taken advantage of, under paid or not paid at all, workplace violence. You name it. This obviously all takes its toll on any normal human being. You start to develop habits to help you cope or navigate your jobs. It could be being overly compliant with an employer or you begin to put more stress on yourself when faced with issues such as scheduling for appointments and such. My direct reason for writing this is that with all my jobs and all the tools I created to help cope with the stresses of uncompromising workplaces I've…
When the boss wants employees to shut up
I’m about to quit walk out on my job.
I’m a salaried employee for a home health care company. I’m supposed to work 8am-4pm Monday through Friday in the office. One of our evening employees abruptly quit a 5pm-8pm shift. I’m a Nursing Assistant as well so I was covering this shift after work for 3 weeks UNPAID prior to hiring the employee that just quit. My boss wants me to keep covering this every night after work Monday through Friday until we find someone else and also not fucking pay me or even help cover the gas for the 30 minute drive “bEcUaSe i’M sALaRy” . That’s a 12 hour day for the same pay. My reward for this is I can take a half day on Fridays for a few weeks. So sick of this shit.
