A Case Against Unions
Now, please read this entirely before saying something, because I understand this may go against a lot of what people feel here, but let me start by saying that I fully support unions and think they are an excellent standard to uphold. Here is my problem: I work in commercial construction. Way back when unions were prevalent, the company unionized because the owner believed in it and it was an excellent way for the guys and the company to make a lot of money. However, as time went on, many more companies started popping up (in all industries) that were non-union. This wasn't really a huge deal because there was still a lot of work for us, so we were fine. What's happening now is that unionized companies are almost completely uncompetitive. What happens basically is this: An owner wants to build a building, an architect creates the plans/blueprints for…
All this support of free markets comes from a misunderstanding of terms. Oligopolies and monopolies suck so people push for a “free market” when what they really want is a perfectly competitive market.

Unpaid breaks – The breakdown
I'm currently working the notice period for a job I rather dislike. I happen to have gotten a job with exactly the same rate of pay (we'll say £10). One perk of my job is that I am paid at full rate for my breaks. I wondered what this meant and wether it would make a difference so I crunched the numbers. I currently get 30 minutes break on a 6 hour shift, making around 1/6th of my day at work unpaid. (Or 16.7%) If we deduct this from my current hourly rate it gives a more true result of £8.33/h. If you wish to argue that breaks should go unpaid, which is a fair point. Then we can go the opposite route, by selecting a job where breaks are paid, it bumps the relative rate of pay up from £10 to £11.67/h. Either way you look at it it…
I’m at a complete loss on what to do
Hi there! I'm looking for some advice. I apologize in advance for the length. I am currently pigeonholed in a position that should've released me to the new department that I accepted a position with. But the higher up is the same higher up for the other department. Now per union Weingarten rights, I will be moved, but I was supposed to train this new person. But they haven't even started yet. But because I'm such a great employee, the higher up feels I'm the only person who could train this new person. But the union rep seems more like the company “yes” person and has a history of siding more with the higher ups. So I feel like everything has fallen on deaf ears on my pleas to be moved now. So knowing this, I've still tried to make the best of it, trying to keep positive that EVENTUALLY…
I became the triggered lib…
So I went to the store with my mom, there was only 1 cashier and a huge line, as we were leaving the guy behind us and the cashier started talking about how all the cashiers had called off and she was the only one there and it was hard for her, the guy and her started a typical no one wants to work chat. My mom turned to me and started talking about how it was the same at her work, how all the busers and other ppl like them would call out from work , I just said “are they being paid a living wage”, since I knew the answer was no (busers and other restaurant workers and grocery store workers…pretty obvious) I certainly wouldn't stick an arm and a leg out let alone apply for one of those jobs. She ended up saying everyone just has a…
I need advice-Please bare with me
As the title says— 6 months ago I started a new job as a CRA (clinical research associate). HR wrote the letter with the title CRA and pay. First day on the job I was told to help out as a receptionist cause no one was there to help. I thought it was a one time deal. I emailed HR after two weeks asking for why this is happening this is NOT in any paperwork. She ignored it and I took documentation of that. Now fast forward 6 months later I’m still being a receptionist lol haven’t touched research at all. My supervisor has zero balls and said “it just takes time to develop your new role.” HR said in a verbal meeting two weeks ago, that is true it takes time. Okay so why did you fucking hire me with that intention of being in research? If you weren’t…
This isn't necessarily antiwork but I figured you guys might know. My work won't let me go overtime right now because apparently the law limits the amount of overtime you work yearly and we want to save this overtime allowance for a busier time of year. I did some googling and didn't see anything about this yearly limit. I did read that employees can only work 8 hours of overtime a week, which to me seems to make the 20 hour a year limit pretty unreasonable. I'm in California btw.
