Having every email micromanaged

So my mate's(34yo) been telling me about this situation at his work which causing alot of anxiety. He works a state government job, not even quite sure what he does. But a few weeks ago he sent out an email on a particularly fast paced/bad day and left off all the “Hello's and Thank you's” on an email involving some big-wig or client. It wasn't rude or anything but he was called up for not being friendly enough. For a month now every email he sends has to be signed off by some department manager, slowing up his work and having his basic ability to communicate critiqued constantly. The other day he was called up for “Being too nice” – I flipped. “WHAT!? That's insane.. I would just tell them to “Back the hell off and let me do my job!” But my mate prioritizes his job security and won't…

Retaliation: Options and Is It Worth It?

Before my current job, I worked for a small company with extreme mismanagement. Extreme time-tracking, distrust of the employees, negative reinforcement…pretty typical stuff, unfortunately. But the worst of it was working for an openly racist and homophobic boss. Unfortunately, I never recorded anything, but one owner is particular repeatedly used the n-word in-office, made jokes about only hiring white people, made jokes about the KKK with clients present, and used other openly homophobic and transphobic language with employees regularly. Once, when the company received a Google review detailing the owner using a racial slur at a local bar, they threatened to sue the poster and had the review removed. I'm not looking for “payback” or anything as much as I wish I could warn others of this person's harmful politics and ideologies before entering a contract with them. It would be important that this isn't traced back to me. Is…

Please help me get FMLA bereavement time in NY

My father passed on Wednesday – during my PTO that I took because he was sick with cancer, so I went out to see him. I work remotely for a tech company. I'm based in NY, the company in MS. According to the NY State FMLA website, I can only get bereavement time if I've been there for more than a year. I was hired in November. I'm not handling his death well, and now I need to return to work on Monday. Anyone go through a similar circumstance?

Advice, please! Injured both arms as a driver

I'm a commercial driver who injured her right hand at home months ago. It was to the point of losing the ability to write. I figured that was what the other arm was for, so I write and have been doing 90 percent with my left. I drive primarily with my left hand anyway, so I figured it would be fine. Well months later, it finally broke and I was at work. Pain went all the way down the left arm, up to the head, neck, and into the chest. I have tingling in the fingers. Basically, I can still drive, but I can't reach upward without pain and weakness in now both arms, so I drive like a little t-rex with my hands at the bottom of the wheel. I also have a really hard time turning my neck. I saw a doctor and she said it sounded like…

I work for a major cell phone company, can they do this?

We have a monthly meeting that is on our off time and is mandatory we attend (even though we don't get paid for it). It's over a 30 min drive away at a different location. We had a meeting this morning. Yesterday I texted my manager letting him know I had a mental health appointment scheduled and wouldn't be able to make it to the meeting. He gave me a thumbs up emoji and said it was fine. He asked me if I worked, which I let me know not till 1pm. He texted me after the meeting this morning, to let me know I had received two high awards. I went into work today and it was chaos with customers so I hit the floor as soon as I could. When I went to the back room, my manager was on the phone and he motioned for me to…

Been working for “free” for 3 weeks with no official start date in sight.

I “landed” a great job with a government entity doing ecology work. I accepted the proposal in late March and have completed all the pre hire paper work. Currently I have moved to the area and have been working for three weeks while not officially on payroll. Talked to HR and they say I'm in “queue” with no idea on how long it will take. This was after 4 days of constantly calling HR, their bosses, ect. Keep placing the blame for the delay on security or another department. Issue is I have already been cleared with them and have had access to their files etc for 3 years just was hired from a third party. Just signed a lease in town and had to drop security deposit and first months rent while making zero income. At this point they owe me over $3000 in back pay, with a big…

Got Dismissed and I Didn’t Just Fall Off a Turnip Truck

I got dismissed today three days before my probation period ended. Reasons were specious. Manager admitted I was a good, reliable worker and everyone liked me. I am not some kid, I have been working for 50 years of my life – since I was a young teenager. I confronted the manager that in three days I would be eligible for benefits. She denied she knew this. I thought to myself, “ I guess I don’t want to work here anyway if they treat employees like that.” I was a major supporter of this company for their progressive environmental work. They hired me partly for experience, partly for my environmental work. So what good is it to be an environmental leader if you cheat your employees of a fair wage and benefits? All new hires since me have been part-time or seasonal.
