Turning down a promotion this morning.
I have been a skilled tradesman for over 30 years. Have had side hustles since i was a teenager, so i know what it means to go the extra mile to achieve some personal peace and a healthy work/ life balance. I have been in leadership positions many times over the years, and know what management entails. Am meeting the owners in an hour to tell them i do not want to be in charge of anybody except myself. They will not pay me enough, and our people principles do not align enough to allow for compromise. Retirement is 5 years away and they can have me as long as the checks are good. My suggestion to all the young people who are struggling: There will always be a struggle. Try to find a healthy balance, work it hard in your 20s-30s, become enough of an expert in your field…

Not my OC but thought this fit here
Pretty much what the title says. To be honest, I do have a good salary, but it wasn't reviewed in over a year. Had a meeting with my boss to get a raise, explained that my duties have increased considerably, as well as the cost of living has skyrocketed since my last review, etc… Boss said (exact quote): “If the cost of living is getting heavy, it is easier and quicker to just cancel that nice David Lloyd membership of yours” He knows I am a member because I have a few free invites every month and have invited some work colleagues on occasion, including him. My response to him: “Yeah, you're right, it is easier to cancel the membership than get anything out of you. So I will do you one better: I'm handing my notice, effective immediately” He then offered a £10k increase, but I was so disappointed…
I've spent 3 years of my life working in call centres. I have frequent, recurrant nightmares that I'm back in one of them, turning up for work at 8:50 and seeing 100 calls in the queue, the incessant din of phones ringing and people talking. I wake up in cold sweats and on the verge of tears. The office I currently work at has the same model of cisco phone I used for 2.5 years at one of my previous call centre jobs. Every time it rings, I shudder, and my heart skips a beat. It's akin to a war veteran hearing fireworks. I'm not being hyperbolic when I say I'd rather be homeless or outright dead than working on one of those absolute hellholes again. Does anyone else have any similar experiences?
A Worrying Pattern
I went to a resume workshop, and I paid a professional to edit my resume. They said my background is very good, and basically I wasn't hyping myself up enough. I was flattered. The fee for the session was very reasonable and they did my cover letter as well. Going to the workshop was a bit embarrassing, because the crowd was more than fifty percent teenagers, but I could see adults. Some were older than me. The resume expert just added some buzzwords and they made me sound more confident. More confident, friendly and open. I've gotten 5 interview offers this week. One of them is for a very good job with a real estate agency. I've gotten into one interview for a good job that could actually pay bills before, and even though it went well I wasn't chosen. I'll never know why I wasn't chosen, but now I…
Long time lurker, first time poster. Recently had someone approach me for a role in my industry which can be very lucrative with the right company (sadly many underpay and overwork). I responded to the invite and as they provided no info on the role I requested salary info and work schedule. Had the guy typing a reply out then ghost me. I hate this idea we are just slaves to the corporations and they couldn't possibly hire someone just after money. Why are we at work if not for trading skills and time for money? Idgaf if you're a work family, get outta here with that toxic bs. Sorry for the rant, it just urks me we can't even trust a company to be honest and upfront about salary expectations etc (even if they would get superior applicant sir they advertised a solid salary – instead of hiding the…
Kinda feels like I’m going backwards here. Just got a 3 percent raise while inflation is going over 9 percent. Paycheck is stretching thinner and thinner, hopefully next year inflation only goes up 3 percent so I feel like it’s win if I get another raise 🤣
