Month: September 2022
I would rather be working on well-funded, crowdsourced research and writing projects. We could be tackling big challenges on a societal and personal level.
Is my experience normal?
I’m 33 and my wife is 35. We both went to college and are still paying down student loans. Admittedly I chose a degree in economics which has proved to not be very practical. We both work and live in Denver and we live in a 4 bedroom house with 5 people in it including me and the wife. During Covid my company decided it was necessary to cut health insurance benefits so we could “stay competitive in uncertain times”. The same year they reported record profits and always kept this attitude that they were struggling and had no money for cost of living pay increases. I had to get my health insurance off the marketplace and it costs roughly $415 a month. I have bipolar type 1 with acute psychosis and an anxiety disorder. I had a severe manic episode that lead to my Hospitalization for almost a month…
A bit of context: a colleague mentioned me to a mate who works at a recruitment agency who was happy to refer me to his colleagues (said friend of my colleague is not a recruitment agent himself, that’s why). I didn’t get a good vibe on our first call, her tone was unfriendly, she sounded unwilling to do her job, and when she asked me my pay expectations, I got told to aim lower because my work experience ain’t nothing to write home about (her sentiments in her tone). This is in contrast with the recruitment agent I spoke to yesterday who was kind, friendly, and even fought for higher pay on my behalf. As much as I like my colleague and appreciate his mate’s help, I can’t see myself working with this lady if her demeanour carries through to our meeting on Monday. I need someone to bat for…
Hi y'all. Former USPS mail carrier here. The video I'm posting below is of the opponent in a NALC (National Association of Letter Carriers) union election being wrongfully arrested in 2018 while lawfully observing the vote count. The video goes into detail of the chain of events and show how some unions operate alongside, rather than against, systems of power. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K_uupKlwVZM&ab_channel=CutAndPaste235 I first want to say this is not an anti-union post. This is a critique on how companies infiltrate and dismantle union power. Some background on me and my experience with the NALC's current union leadership. I am a former CCA, and worked at the post office delivering mail for 7 months. It was, by far, the worst job I have ever experienced. I work 75 to 90 hours per week the whole 7 months. I would have 2 to 3 days off per month. This is not just…
I just want to say that I love the the fight and the angst in this generation of workers because you guys are standing up for your rights and standing up for the rights of your fellow employees…right on! But, if I could lend one piece of advice I would say that more folks need to start making use of the CEO of the company in order to get your needs and your objectives met. I mean sure he's probably making 300 – 400 times the average employee. But he's still just that…an employee. If you're fed up enough with your job conditions that you are ready to lay it all on the line and tell your supervisor where to go, you're already at the point of no return. Why not copy the CEO on that email too? I tell you what copying the CEO on something like that does…it…
USA. New job, 4 months in. Realized the issue a month ago, informed HR. Progress has not been made so I told HR I want to be in touch with whoever they’re in touch with. HR blew me off and said I’d be “made whole” and “not to worry.” What to do? I want to say fix it by close of business or I report to the labor board.
