I’m a direct care worker for a special needs school and residential facility. We see and deal with some really messed up stuff but the students we work with are amazing people and they keep the morale alive more than anything. The place has been severely understaffed for more than a year now. The solution according to administrators is to send a company wide email every week detailing how many call ins there were for both weekday and weekend shifts. The last email said: The school had two days this week with NO CALL INS!! It just seems wrong and guilt trippy to me. We work with people who can have serious issues and needs. This can be very taxing and like of course people are going to call in sick or with mental stuff to get over. Understaffing isn’t the responsibility of the workers. By the way, I only…

I work at a family run restaurant in A rural area and we pool tips. At the end of the night cash tips are put into the register and we are told they are then split up and put into our paychecks along with the credit card tips. We are not told tip totals at the end of the night and We do not have access to our paystubs, which is through an online payroll service. We just found out that these cash tips have not been paid out since the restaurant opened (a server figured it out and confronted the owners), the owner is claiming it was the fault of the payroll company and that they will handle it and pay us. This is not the first time something like this has happened at this family’s businesses. Is there a way for me to report anonymously as to not…
I started in this company as an intern while I was finishing my master's degree in law. I was exploited (I was considered as a writing machine, in a hurry, at the expense of my lunch break, finding myself working on weekends because of the unbearable deadlines imposed on me) and I kept the same attitude throughout my internship: please everyone, ask for nothing in return, cry in silence, hold on to my position just for the fame of the firm. They didn't teach me anything in this internship: from the first day, I wrote the drafts by myself that they then used in memos, emails, powerpoint presentations, calls with clients,… My internship ended shortly before my June exams started: I attended very few classes because of my full-time internship (the hours went way beyond the classic 9AM – 5PM), my university “friends” were envious of my internship and never…
A friend of mine recently quit his job to come work with me. The company he was formerly employed with held out the first 3 weeks pay checks. The company has given one pay check so far while deducting training cost, company vehicle damage, and other various fees. He's tried calling payroll to get a verbal statement of what's happening, but payroll just keeps ignoring his calls. I'm hoping someone here could share some advice as where to go from here. Thanks in advance!
I work in a wholesale grocery store, specifically the deli department. It's difficult to get people to work in my department even though the work isn't hard, it's just off-putting to new hires I guess. I also work the closing shift, so I really only work with 3 others to cover the entire week. We're stretched a little thin is the point. So you can imagine my delight when my fellow closer mentioned that the store manager complained that he was wearing sweatpants, and he can't do that. Store uniform, etc etc. To a minimum wage deli clerk working the closing shift. Sweatpants don't impact the job or food safety/health codes. It's clean pants, after all. Just not jeans, which is dress code. My closer doesn't call out or show up late. He's nice to customers and does a good job. He's been wearing sweatpants for months without a complaint.…
My boyfriend works dying textiles for a small business and makes minimum wage. There used to be two dyers but one has left, and now it’s just been him for months. They are being worked to the bone, and the business finally hired a new trainee that my boyfriend has been working with training for the past few shifts. The trainee mentioned off hand that they got a raise immediately once they had volunteered to take up dying. My boyfriend has worked there for a year and never received a raise. We found out the trainee had been being paid 50 cents more than my boyfriend— the head dyer. His bosses promised him a bigger than usual raise at the end of the year, but they are RIGHT NOW prepping for a big event and so he is working extra shifts now What should he do in this situation? He…
