My job, on the outside looking in, is pretty great – I make over COL for my area, my team is good, and I work from home. I can't complain about it to anyone in my life because I always get “it could be worse”. Thing is – I am my job, and my job owns me. Yes I make over COL but all that extra goes to debt incurred during the pandemic. Yes, I work from home but in another time zone – meaning the only time I get to myself or to have a social life is a few hours in the late morning (which I more often than not spend online cause I'm a loser). Don’t shop today.
If it's important to you that employees don't work on holidays then don't reward businesses for making them do so.
The business that I work at has a tradition of closing early the day before Thanksgiving and sending support staff home. This is obviously something that is discussed among the partners ahead of time. And still, my particular boss was “remote” in the morning and then she waltzed into the office at 12:45pm and acted as if she was shocked to hear that the managing partner had sent out a company wide email telling support staff that the office would close at 1:00pm and to please enjoy the holiday. What really ticks me off is that she tried to act as if she didn't know about the closing and she came at me with “But we need to do X,Y and Z today.” This is not the first holiday that she's done this to me. My mom is 53 and has worked retail her whole life. She had been at this one company for over a decade, most of that time as store manager, when earlier this year the company decided to fuck around with the sale bonuses the employees got. My mom got pissed, talked to a lawyer and figured out what they were trying to do was illegal, so she told the company she was not having it. Long story short they negotiated and my mom got 2 years of unemployment pay and a nice chunk of money on the condition she did not take them to court.
