This is after multiple discussions with my boss, albeit casual ones. I'm the admin assistant for a small office that has no dress code and has no visitors, but they had me set up at the reception desk when I first started working here 11 months ago during my trial period, which I was fine with. There are two vacant offices here and one of my coworkers recently swapped, from her “starter office” to the largest vacant corner office, and during the process there was discussion of me moving since I have no natural lighting at my desk and no thermostat, which led to me using a space heater all winter. My boss seemed casual about it and would chime in things like “I don't see why not,” which gave me the impression that it was fine to move and that she could care less. I'm the one who cleaned…
Month: July 2023
My wife’s worst manager.
A comment to another post reminded me of this, so I figured I would share. Back in 2021 my wife was working at a well known restaurant about 2 miles from our house. As she would use uber to get back and forth every day her paychecks were spent completely on transportation. In other words she wasn't working there for the money. Our city had an ice storm around mid January, and as such she was unable to find a ride. No Uber, Lyft, or even taxis were willing to touch those roads. She calls her manager to inform him that she doesn't have a way to work, so he decides to send one of the cooks to pick her up and drive her in. She was on the clock for 15 minutes before he (manager) decided she could go home because they weren't busy… she asked how she was…
Last Day July 31st
And I couldn't be happier. I was stuck at a call center job pretty much canceling subscriptions and issuing refunds while praying I don't get a gift card call because there isn't much we can do and the company isn't responsible for third party sellers of their gift cards so you buy one and it's redeemed before you walk out the store, nothing we can do. You can try the place you bought it but no guarantees. Oh and no precautions put in place on large gift card purchases at the stores. In training we were told of a guy who spent 45k on gift cards due to a scam. When asked “well some stores limit the amount you can buy. Why not this time?” I was told “well businesses and educational institutions but lots of gift cards too and some people would rather use a gift card than credit…
She tried to fire me so i quit
-this will be a long post and idk how to summarize tldr Ive never really told anyone this story but i think it belongs here so here goes nothing. My mom worked at a childcare center all my life. In my 8th grade year the business was sold and they had a new owner. This owner owned a couple of other centers around town. Her mother helped manage them but she was NOT the owner. Some years passed, my mom got a promotion to be director (think of boss/manager in childcare terms)and i got grandfathered in to work there as well after graduating high school. She split her time between teaching and running the office/ doing required paperwork. Often times she was there on the weekends. You may ask why that is important in this story but it is because in those years my mom and the owner got extremely…
How do you stop caring so much.
I started working a new job end of may. My boss said she “has high expectations” because of my good CV and degree. Saying things like “You wont let the team down won't you? Can I trust you?” “I want you in a manager position because you seem to be the most competent worker here. So it will be intense. Be prepared.”… I was a bit taken back by this but I also need the money and my co-workers are great. The thing is: We are understaffed. Logistics and Sales manager cancelled his holiday, tells me that everything will go down if he wont stay. He got threatened to be kicked out 2 times because his wife was sick and he had to stay with her for a week. In the second week a co worker of mine got sick. Got called while I was still sleeping on my day…
I hear so many stories about people getting yelled at by their employers and I've experienced it myself. It's just shocking how common this is. It's just so unprofessional and rude to raise your voice at someone, but especially an employee. Like seriously, is there ever a situation in an office that's dire enough that you need to yell at someone? It is *never* that serious. And a lot of people have childhood trauma so if you yell at an employee, don't be surprised if you catch them crying in the break room. Making your employees cry will lower productivity so you're really just shooting yourself in the foot. This is just another way that the working class is treated like subhumans and it pisses me off so much.
Is this normal? I was approached by someone on LinkedIn and we had a talk that was quite nice. This person told me someone from HR would message me and someone did. This person asked for a resume (I'm fine with this) and also a motivation letter. What would I even put in there?
What’s the best way to quit?
Back story: I am 61, and have been working at my current company (financial industry) for about 5 years. In addition to base pay, they pay a bonus January 31 (up to 25% of base) depending on how well the company did the previous year. We don’t hear about the bonus until mid-January. They do yearly budgeting in the fall and typically have lay-offs before January so they can avoid paying out bonuses. I have no benefits coming upon retirement as I have not been at the company long enough. Medical insurance is basically the reason I stay. I am a business analyst, but more technical than others in my group. They do not appreciate me because I am introverted and geeky, but I am the key to getting to their data. And there is a lot wrong with their data. They tried to hire a “backup” for me a…
Work is survival for most people in this day and age. Those people who still preach work to be a source of pride or claiming that you should enjoy your work (most don’t the reality) are either ignorant people or filthy rich. Work is means to an end. Im not a boomer, but I get the feeling that there is too much bashing boomers sometimes if you compare them to 20 something ”influencers” who only talk about their lifestyle of doing videos, making and having freedom and creating a false impression to their generation of followers that everyone can be a big winner, make a lot of money etc by being a social media influencers. At least boomers didn’t grow up in this extremely vapid influencer culture. Most people still have to make their living by regular jobs. Young people will have to learn the hard way that 99.9% of…
Not a surprising shift… but so many of the conclusions are so Boomer-centric it makes it cringworthy to read.
