This is a long read and I needed to get it off my chest so buckle up kids. Tldr; started new job, lots have people have been in my job and keep leaving or getting fired, I think it might be the manager. So I went for a lax interview and I initially didn’t get the job. It was a really nice interviewer (she left last month due to being made redundant at another office) and I got along with her well but the interview went south when I mentioned my child, she said it’s a fast paced workplace and they prefer to hire people without children because their last member of staff was always calling off work with childcare and sickness issues. I fired back “honestly, my kids leg needs to be falling off or something to get a day off school, his education is the most important and…

Resume advice is ridiculous these days
Mini rant, because I'm job hunting and very much over it. I feel like every time I update my resume, I have to redo it from scratch just to keep up with what is considered the “standard” at the time, knowing full well it'll change again in 6 months. – Make your resume stand out, but also don't focus on aesthetics. – Use two columns to make it easier for people to read, but also only use one column to make it easier for computers to read. – Don't have gaps, but also don't list every job. – Tell us what your key responsibilities were, but also tell us what your achievements were. Also do this in your cover letter, but don't repeat yourself. I just saw a LinkedIn post where a recruiter complained about too many soft skills on resumes because “I assume you know how to do all…
Am I allowed to negotiate my salary?
Just came back from an interview where the starting hourly rate for part time is $16. But at my present job, I currently make $16.50/hr. Am I allowed to negotiate for a matching/higher salary? The reason I'm more inclined to take the $16 is because it's much closer in terms of commute, there's centralised AC (we just have massive fans where I work and sometimes that barely does the job) and it's been consistently hot throughout the entire week 104~110°F/40~43°C. Taking the $16 job would grant me with more flexible times and a much easier commute. Given its proximity, I'd essentially be spending $0 on gas alone. But would I be allowed to negotiate from a $16 to a $16.50 (maybe even $17) ? before I'm hired?
Denied After Personality Test
I (26M) usually don’t make these types of posts, but this was something I haven’t heard a lot of on this subreddit and wanted to share my experience. Over the past month I have been interviewing consistently and extensively communicating with the potential employer and during my phone interview they seemed to absolutely love me. Every question they asked I had a well crafted and articulate response, they seemed to like me enough to get past phone interviews and into an in-person interview. Fast forward a couple of days, I travel 2+ hours for my interview, even though the position was local. No big deal, it’ll show initiative. I arrive 30 minutes early, they make a big spectacle of it “oh he’s a good one, he was here so early!” Etc. We sit down for the interview and what was only supposed to be a quick interview turned into 2…
If you work from home and, like me, hate how quickly Teams will grass on you for not being at your computer / not active, I found the solution. If you go into your calendar, and at the top, you'll see 'meet now'. If you click that, it puts you in a meeting room on your own but says you're in a call on your status. You can then change your status to available and it will not show you as away for as long as you are in the call. It will stop your computer from going into Lock Screen as well – my work computer is set up so that I can't change the amount of time it takes for it to go to Lock Screen. It saves having to wiggle a mouse around or use a paperweight. Do with this what you will 🙂 I usually take…
I’ve been asking about raises for months and received .75 but it was like pulling teeth. Since then all I’ve been told is we don’t have the money. I put in my two weeks for somewhere that’s giving me a $2 raise (which for me is good enough, they’re all entry level jobs) and suddenly they could give me a $2.25 raise. Somehow they found the money but I know I will literally never receive another pay increase if I stay. Honestly just frustrated it took this to get more money but I know that’s pretty normal. While I’m slightly considering staying I know it’s better if I don’t
I don’t like my new job and want to quit
It’s not ‘that’ hard but is not much money and it’s less after benefits I might hate it It’s a lot of paperwork Thoughts? 2 weeks in
A healthy work environment…
When I (27)was 16, I got my first job working for my friends dad at his workshop repairing printers for a summer. All of the employees got on well, they had the radio on, singing and joking around and morale was good. My friends dad who owned the small business paid more than fair wages, private health care (in UK where it is rare) , 26 days paid annual leave and didn't micromanage at all. There were approximately 10 employees total, and my friends dad would bring food gifts to the workshop every day, treat everyone for lunch now and again, and treat everyone with respect. Even when people made mistakes, no shouting, blaming or belittling of any employee. At 16, I really enjoyed working there due to the work environment, and saved up money for my first gaming PC and a BMX bike, two things Id always wanted. That…
Tips for doing the minimum
I'm 37 and I make decent money. I live beneath my means and I do in any way shape or form want to move up to management. I managed restaurants for a number of years: I'm done. I've decided that working at 100% is not sustainable for me because I'm America we do not live in a meritocracy. I know it doesn't help if you don't exactly know what I do, so what are some general tips? I have to tell myself to slow down when I know the place is falling behind. It's not my fault it's falling behind, and I'm not going to break my back making up for management's failure to staff the place. I'm not any extra days or hours. I'm not stressing out about it either. Allowing myself to slow down to breathe, and let things fall behind helps my mental health. Smile and nod…
Is there anything I can do here or is this solidified?
