So basically I was told this will be my last working day.

Here’s a preface. I’m going to college for IT and software development. I work three days a week during term, 4 during break. I’ve done absolutely everything possible to make my bills as low or nonexistent as possible to accommodate less working more studying. Past couple weeks the boss has been harping on dresscode. I technically break dress code because even though I’m still wearing black slacks, they have pockets(the extra cargo kind). The only pair of non pocket slacks I own are my dress pants for funerals and weddings. I mentioned I’ve gotten my bills down as far as humanely possible, without too much detail that comes out to $1200 a month. I make $100 a day if I go through a full shift. So during break I will make $1600 a month but during term I only make $1200. Off term is meant to either save up for…

Back to my roots. Love working in fast food.

Recently im going through a mindfuck loop. I worked at one fast food joint. I thought i got a nice office job but it stressed me out and was so toxic I hopped ship and ran to the first fast food job that hired me again. I feel a little defeated by the big bad corporate world. Hoping this job is just the right amount of stress to get me by. And it reminded me, I actually enjoyed working in fast food more than I did sitting down at an office and we need to keep that in mind when deciding how much to pay these skilled workers because fast food is, such a fun job and it can be wonderful but it gets so stressful getting burned that the pay is soooo little in comparison to how much money those businesses bring in everyday. fast food workers need a…

Getting bought out, have to apply for my job.

I've been part of two company buyouts before. Both times company B comes in and buys us out in full. Tools, assets, and employees, etc. And then we had an informal meeting that was pretty much saying what benefits are changing and to negotiate. Enter the company I work for now, A. We do a lot of work for company B (which is the company buying us out.) We were originally told they would buy the company out and we'd all be going along with an informal type meeting to go over things. How it's been in the past. Now, it's been radio silence for a month, the buyout is in two weeks and I just found out that company B isn't hiring us all on immediately, and if we want to keep our jobs we have to apply and go through the interview process. So, boss of company A…

Not being paid for travel time?

So just some context.. this organization is a 501c non profit and is based in Minnesota. This has happened a couple of times but most recently last week. As part of management we were signed up for a conference in the cities, which is about 2 hours from where we are. We are taking company vans where we cram 6 people into a van. There is some employees who voiced concerns of riding with certain people or a lot of people due to Covid because they still trying to be careful for the sake of their children. One staff even got a doctors note with their condition stating that because of her diagnosis she should take precautions to reduce exposure. Well this all got brushed aside and normally resulted in being argumentative from the executive director. Because of the doctors note she was called in and asked if she could…

How much, on average, does an employer pay other than an employees wages?

We’re short staffed and just lost more workers. I know businesses pay more than an employees hourly rate with things like FICA, disability, insurance, whatever. I don’t want to quit, but I am demanding a raise. I want an average figure of how much money the company is saving by not having to pay benefits to it’s lost employees. “You lost X number of employees which saves you Y since you’re not paying Z in benefits”

What type of manager is the worst to work for and why?

As the title states who is the worst to work for that you've experienced. For me it was always the managers that have no formal education in management. They generally got to where they are through sucking up and they have a death grip on whatever low-grade power they have.

What tips should a young person know about entering the workforce? From a workers rights perspective.

When I was a kid, I was lucky to have a grandfather who made sure we knew our worth. Being comfortable with being mistreated isn't something I wish on anyone. What are things people new to the workforce need to know?

I think my gf should quit her job

My gf works at a assisted living facility and I’ve been trying to convince her to get a job at a different one. I use to work at the same place(it’s how we met) but my time in the healthcare industry was destined to be brief and I mean BREIF. That place single handedly ruined the healthcare field for me. There was always something I did wrong or if the aides from the previous shift forgot to do something (they just didn’t give a damn to do it) and I didn’t catch the mistake in time, I would get chewed out and have veiled threats made against me. When others made the same mistakes, it would simply be ignored. Now mind you I’m the type of person that no matter what job I have, I always give it 110% and if I make a mistake then I must hold myself…
