I'm in Alberta, Canada. My new employer has a policy that you show up 15 minutes early, open up the store, and clock in at opening time. Same thing for closing up. Clock out at closing time, then spend 15 minutes closing up shop. My understanding is, if you work, you get paid, but I can't find any specific laws to that effect. Can someone tell me who is right and, if possible, provide proof?

William-Sonoma is a store i used to go to with my mom growing up and i haven’t been in years- idk maybe they’ve expanded their product lines. but as far as i can remember, they sell high-end (over priced) kitchen/cooking equipment. why on earth do they require experience in programming with Python?
Work events
Corporate work environment – There is an all company event coming up. It was never expressed to be mandatory, just a “please come anytime and leave anytime during this 4 hour window” basically. My team is mostly remote so our team isn’t often all together in the office anyway. This event conflicts with my schedule for commuting. My spouse works a noon to midnight shift the same day. We currently have one car as we haven’t needed more than one since I work mostly remote. At best I can go into the office early but I’d have to leave before noon (event starts at noon) to get back home, so my spouse can use the car to get to his job. Public transport is out of the question as we live in a rural town. The event was held last year as well. I didn’t go to that either as…
Timeline of events: -I told the owner and VP of my company (the two levels above me) that I had major concerns and complaints that need to be addressed immediately. -They insist on a face to face meeting (we work remotely within the same area) to discuss issues and ask me to send an email listing my complaints and concerns beforehand so they can prepare. We schedule the meeting and agree on it. -They tell me to put a hold on all my daily duties until we meet. Only a couple days, so I don't fight it. -I send the scathing (but professional) email, and before they can respond, one of our four total non-management staff quits for reasons mirroring the concerns I'm also expressing. -Owner and VP respond to my email saying the meeting is being postponed so they “can better address all of my concerns”. The email ends…
It's been three business days since I took the urine nonDOT pre-employment drug test, and my main worry is the THC levels. The employer contacted me to discuss sending me the necessary equipment like a laptop, but there was no mention of the drug test. I didn't bring it up either, so as not to raise any concerns. Can I make the assumption that I passed the test? For context, I had used THC vape 75 days before the test (stoned for a week) and before that, I had remained drug-free for a year.
I want to be doing more than a 9 to 5.
Hello, I currently work a 9to5 job Monday to Friday. I’m tired of working this but I understand I need to do this for the time being to sustain myself. I want to know what I can do on my down time to get out of this cycle. I have a hard time finding energy to do other things once I’m out of work but I really don’t see myself working a 9 to 5 for the next ten years. What should I be doing on my free time and how do I stop thinking about work when I’m off the clock? Should I go back to college or is there other ways that will get me out of the 9 to 5 lifestyle? Thanks for any help!
That’s pretty much it. I’m still in training and the program takes awhile. There’s certain online classes I gotta attend as well as self study modules. They really don’t take that long to complete at all. Training class is about an hour a day and the modules take maybe like another 2 hours. I’m even ahead of schedule on the modules just for something to do. I usually wrap up around 330-4 and I see no reason to stick around when I’m done so I go home. I’ve noticed how friendly the other 3 people are with eachother who sit in my area. (one of them is new too) I try to talk to them, and I try to get to know them but sometimes they just seem irritated with me. They give me short answers. When I say goodmorning or have a good night a lot of times I’m…
For abit of backstory, we recently got a new manager who has been great. They listened to our concerns around salary and took it to senior management. Senior management pushed back and said they don't think we deserve the pay increase because we are not doing XYZ. The fucked thing is that I already do XYZ in my role so that's bullshit. Anyway, my coworker resigned for a role doing the exact same thing for a huge increase in pay. My other coworker was told that their role is going to be replaced by an automated system so the company doesn't see their value anymore. I have receipts and facts that I do what they believe i need to be doing to get a pay rise, do I bring it up with my manager and present the facts and ask for a fair salary or do I disengage and look…
How do I get over imposter syndrome?
I just graduated with my master’s in May and was able to convince my job where I was intern I my to make me full time. Now once or twice a month I get bad anxiety that I am not worth my job and I will get fired the next day. How do you get past that cause right now it doesn’t feel good.
