The rules at this job…never have I ever

My company celebrates the day before and after Thanksgiving. However because I'm maintenance I have to work those days. The part that angers me is I don't clock in as our paycom system already has it logged as a holiday and we get “comp” days where we clock in and just stay home. And to make things worse our boss is the only one who has access to this list of saved “comp” days. So I have been working my ass off to get out of debt and recently asked him how many days I have. He says 2 and I know for a fact that's not right since I've been there for over a year now. The problem is no one has access to this paper and HR won't look into it… recently I wrote a formal complaint and HR won't do anything. Im having other issues with HR…

Degree ≠ Education

Through a new state law, I (30M) recently was awarded a belated Associates of General Studies degree… as a bit of context, I was a mineralogy major (~2011 – 2014) and had to leave school in my final year, because the job that was allowing me to afford school promoted me and asked me to start traveling as a SCADA specialist (Google SCADA for a nerdy rabbit-hole, if you want lol). A few years ago, the company where I was working was acquired and I was laid off, and so I’ve been working in the semiconductor industry since then (cool job, not the issue presently). Anyway, many of my colleagues/managers have been nagging at me for years to finish my degree; I always got shoulder shrugs when I brought up the money aspect (or the I’m-still-paying-student-loans-for-the-first-go aspect, for that matter). When I mention that I have quite a lot of…

888 – Unions in the Gilded Age

I’ve been watching the show The Gilded Age and the latest episode showed the unions winning against the fictitious business tycoon George Russel, after risking their lives for their cause. Their slogan was 888- 8 hours to work, 8 hours to sleep and 8 hours to do other things, given that their previous conditions of 10-12 hours of work which left no time to live. I presume there’s a lot of truth even though the show is fictional. Given their past victories, why did unions dwindle in popularity in the US? Meanwhile we currently see Denmark’s unions joining in solidarity with Sweden’s against Tesla. What would it take for unions to become popular and powerful again?

Was told for months that I’d get a bonus on December 15th. 10 days before, my supervisor tells us we’re not getting it after all. How the frack am I going to afford Christmas for my kid now?!

This is just a vent. I'm so angry/irritated beyond words. I was told for MONTHS. from July onward that my whole department would get a bonus at Christmas. Even the director of our department promised it. Anywhere between $500 to $1500, depending on performance reviews which had to be submitted by December 1st. I went above and beyond and was awarded an “exceptional” yearly performance review and my supervisor told me that I would definitely get a bonus. Couldn't tell me the amount but I was just happy to get anything at all. So I didn't sign up for any of the Christmas lists. Didn't do toys for tots like I've done in the past. Because I was told multiple times that I'd get a bonus. I thought OH SHIT. I'll actually be able to get my child something for Christmas. I might be able to pay off my past…

I have to wake up at 6AM to take my boyfriend to work

I’m his only mode of transportation, he can’t take the bus because he doesn’t have the money to buy a buss pass every morning and his boss refuses to change his hours so I’m the one who has to drive him to work at 6 in the fucking morning and it’s terrible because I can’t go back to sleep, and when I do get to go back to sleep I have to wake up in the next few hours so I can pick him up. Idk what to do.

Can’t feed your family? Just go to the food bank!

My company is doing a foodbank drive for Christmas. Someone mentioned to me that there was a sign in our lunch room above some bins that read “Leave what you can” & “Take what you need.” That sign acknowledges that the company I work for is aware that some people I work with can't pay their bills, feed their families, etc. but instead of paying more they expect employees to take from the food donations what other employees donate. The owner has a RED EYE Hellcat. Not only is that the top of the line spec but they get 60 miles TO THE TANK! if you drive conservatively. Plus 93 octane engine means more expensive fuel costs… Currently the cost of just 87 octane around here is $5.85/gallon. I've also talked with almost everyone I work with and figured out how much most people make. Some people have started at…

Layoff … and they’ll pay.

I did software validations for a medical company for ten years. And now they cut my position, which is a huge mistake on their side. In the beginning, I defined what a “software validation” actually is. I created documents and processes for that, and did it. And teached colleagues from support how to do it … with my documents. Now some moron in the upper levels decided: If the support guys can do that, we don't need the expensive document guy anymore. — But they didn't think that out: As without my documents, the support guys wont go anywhere. Our customers are legally required to have a software validation, and our company sold that software with the assurance that we can deliver that validation … which we can't do now anymore, as they laid me off. The “we” in here is misleading, as there is no “we” anymore. They're screwed,…
