I’m on week 3 of my new job and my boss has already made me cry. For context, this is a very traditional business, so our hours are 8-5 and dress code is business professional. When I had interviewed I asked what the hours were and she said 8:30-5. I was told on the first day to come in at 8:30, and I’ve been getting in between 8:20-8:30 every day since. I have noticed that most people are already in by the time I come in, so I was getting the hint, but no one had said anything to me.
Until today, I had a 1:1 with my manager and her and I have been getting along great (so I thought). Also, I’ve genuinely been trying to learn my new position and ask a lot of questions, taking notes on everything etc. All of a sudden her tone shifts and she asks me how I’m doing and says that I’m not as enthusiastic as when I interviewed. Goes onto explain that she’s very unhappy with my hours and that I’m getting in at 8:20 and leaving at 5, but not making up the time by staying later. Says that people had been mentioning me getting in late. She said that getting in late lacks enthusiasm and being new I need to set an example. I’m normally an emotional and sensitive person so I don’t take bad feedback well so I started crying in front of her. Like bawling. I’m so embarrassed and don’t want to go in tomorrow. I don’t know why she didn’t tell me week one to come in at 8 if it was such a huge issue.
