Throw-away account. I'm a salaried manager in the st.louis area where 18 stores where purchased by an owner who already had 20: total 38 stores now.
Every store has at least 3 salaried managers; average 40 employees (some outliers); most multi-million dollar stores.
When I was hired, I was hired much above people in my same position. Ive spoken to many salaried managers about this; I do my due diligence in agitation and spreading this info to them because the crack is I'm in a more preferred demographic than most of the salaried managers.
But it's not only that. And I will try to be succinct and include more than just my grievances from my privileged spot as a salaried manager.
Employees are fired over text message for something they've done days ago at work and still worked shifts until then. Proving they are being used as cheap throw away labor (but we already knew that about food)
My supervisor is trying to enforce a ban on discussing wages. (We knew this about fast food)
There are registered sex offenders working next to you younger kids (we knew this)
A manager who raped many employees has only been transfered. (Not sure if they still work for us, but I've seen them as soon as 2 months ago)
A girl was recently raped by an employee at a store I used to work at.
The store manager at that same store directly above -still employeed today- is a racist and I have called him out for that. Many many employees who work there will back that claim up.
That same manager tried getting me to fire a manager and her “goons” which is context enough to tell his opinion of poc.
I have spoken to both crew and managers who -when we were purchased- had their pay wrong by a minus of one grand.
The director of operations came onboarded purchased McDonald's employees by saying “You don't need to tell us your pay, I have it on this sheet.” The sheet was blank. Many employees will back this claim up.
Salaried managers typically don't get to run their “department” as a primary job duty (fsla) -more than just me, most salaried managers are in this boat. I -like many more salaried managers- typically have days where we are either the only person in the kitchen or in service.
In stores fortunate enough to have 4 salaried managers have at least 1 of them running the “guest service department” which in the corporate stores has duties. But in 38 McDonalds at least, they are not given a directive. (Fsla again)
Employees are FORCED to use a pay card if they're not salary. Printed checks are given to crew, but they are under harsh pressure and threats to use the pay card.
Crew people will be given raises by general managers, but the main office handles payroll. I have checked an employees wage before, saw a larger number in the store system and then saw the pay stub they showed me. The hourly rates were wrong.
Speaking of pay stubs. I don't know anyone who has the promised access to their paystubs online… Not even salaried managers.
With threat of termination we are being forced to keep doors unlocked despite there being days were only 4 people are on a shift at a time. Meanwhile the store still makes at least 10 grand a day.
I hear my store manager “not buying it” when an employee says he was locked up for 24 hours, with evidence. Now that employee is on his last days before he is fired.
I plan to go to the news with this same post as an anonymous email as well, because 38 stores across 2 different owners, across multiple years is a large story I hope sees publicity, seeing as our news papers being delivered in our stores almost daily talk about the Starbucks unions spreading, and the workers revolting. Yet, the people above are somehow quelling anyones ability to realize this.
There are most likely more that I have not written down and will remember later. But if anyone works in the STL area in anyone of these 38 ff&g LLC stores or a previous banducci employees, share your stories here. Or if you know anyone who works at McDonald's in STL area, share this with them.
But also, if anyone knows what steps to take from here to help out, share your advice.
Edit: no Ill will to the brand, or the owners. Potentially the higher ups are not all necessarily acting with malicious intent; however if that's the case, then gross negligence is being committed through the continuation of employment of individuals who are other wise breaking the law.
Addition: someone from a store came to me the other day to inform me they are being threatened with disciplinary action if they don't schedule 15 year old past a legal time for them to be there.
