I wanted to get your guys thoughts on this. I knew someone whos SO worked at a hospital and they told me they have a market place where they are allowed to sell there PTO to other employees, I asked what the average PTO day goes for but never got an answer but I wanted to get your thoughts on this concept (for the record the hospital has a pretty good benefits package from what I have heard)
I have personally have mixed feelings on this
- if someone has used all there PTO and needs an emergency day, they can buy one
- this seems good on the surface but also bad in the aspect of not being able to take an emergency day if you needed it
- If someone is tight on money then they can sell there PTO or invest it or do W/E with the money
- a part of me feels the answer to this is paying a living wage but everyone has emergencies and I thought if it was me I would be willing to sell my PTO for home improvements, down payment on a house or a vehicle and I could probably see my self selling at some of my vacation for these purposes (though I would not want to sell all of it)
- This doesn't seem to cost the employer anything, they pay out the same amount of PTO but it costs some employee something to “buy” a PTO day which feels like the employer pushing the cost of business to the employee
- As far as I could tell the system did not allow employees to simply cash out the PTO directly through the company
