Need some help. My best friend got falsely accused of stealing. But they won’t tell him what he stole or show him footage of him stealing it.

This is a weird one (at least for me, I’ve never heard anything like it before). My best friend [19M] just called me, in tears, explaining that he had been fired from his job at a smoke shop for stealing. When I asked him what he stole, he told me that he hadn’t stolen anything. Which I, of course, found strange. He said that his boss called him into his office and said that they had him on camera stealing, and asked him to return the stolen item. However, they wouldn’t show him the alleged video or even tell him what item they were accusing him of stealing. Since my friend had no stolen item to return, they told him that they would be calling the police. It all immediately smelled fishy to me. Why would a business sack an employee for stealing, fabricate a story about said theft, and…

Why would a business sack an employee for stealing, fabricate a story about said theft, and then not produce evidence when prompted? Is there an angle to this I’m just not getting?

If you can explain this to me, please do. Also, if you have any ideas for what my friend can do to get his job back, or at least to protect himself if the police come around, or any information at all to help, we would be very grateful.

Thank you all.
