Marriott garnishing wages from overpayment 6 months ago

Marriott is garnishing our wages by half of our paychecks for at least 20 weeks for some of us without our consent or knowledge due to Kronos being hacked in December and they have no idea what hours we worked since their system was down. SUPPOSEDLY I OWE OVER 5K?!?!? Our Marriott was supposedly basing our paychecks on our previous work week. I was hired for Night Auditor in June of 2021 at $13 per hour. Went down to $12 per hour when transferred without consent. Then got a raise to $13.50 along with every other employee to meet the new hiring wages amount. For starters I noticed my pay was messed up and emailed my GM & AGM immediately when I began to have issues in November of 2021. I had just transferred from the Courtyard to the Residence Inn so my checks not only said I was working…

I had just transferred from the Courtyard to the Residence Inn so my checks not only said I was working 40 hours of straight time at each location but also that I was working 11.5 overtime as well. Total of 80 hours straightime and 11.50 in overtime on like 5 checks straight. My pay was also messed up in the fact that they gave me a pay decrease of $1 without telling me and when I noticed it and brought it to their attention they said “Everyone will be getting a raise to $13.50 in a couple weeks so we aren't worried about it” but what about the 4 paychecks I was underpaid by $1…those same weeks of being underpaid my hourly rate I was also being paid for working at 2 locations at $12 during the Kronos crash. GM also told me that I should put that money in a high yield savings account…I literally had bills to pay and paid them. Living paycheck to paycheck is already a hardship…how am I supposed to save money during inflation???

I was leaving Courtyard because they were editing my time to add breaks without my consent and knowledge among many many other issues.

Yesterday on 7/1/2022 my boss stated that everyone needs to print out their check stubs for the months of Dec &Jan and turn them in.

I don't want to do this because what if they use us turning in our check stubs as “consent”?!?!?

I live in Louisiana and have NO idea what our laws are but marriott claims my overpayment is over $5k and they are supposedly garnishing our wages for at least 20 weeks depending on how much we owe. They did not email us and management did not inform us they would be garnishing our wages. They only asked for our pay stubs to be dropped off in the safe.

During Kronos hack we couldn't clock in or out and we were writing our time on paper to give to manager. I have no access to this paper to verify the amount of time they accuse me of being overpaid. I normally work plenty of overtime and also between two locations during this whole ordeal.

They are taking 50% of every check during INFLATION and we are already living paycheck to paycheck.

If we walk out will they just take a lump sum? If we quit will they garnish our wages from another job???

My coworker was underpaid and they claim she owes almost $300….they based it on her one weird 32 hour work week when normally she works 40 hour work weeks and sometimes over that. She is actually OWED money and they garnished her from her last check.

Just a few info points for when people say “you knew so you should have saved the money” My water bill went from $16 to $175 overnight in November when a new company bought our water company. My electricity went from an average of $170 to an average of over $500 a month. Gas went from $20 each time to fill my tank to $70 each time I fill my tank. Groceries have gone from an average of $600 a month for my family to well over an average of $1,700 a month. Next month my house payments go up up by $300 a month due to home insurance inflation.
