My brother ran away from home recently and my boss still asked me to stay at work longer

I dont know what to do I stayed at work for them and instead if being grateful they talked shit about me because I didnt do someone else's job and now I'm in trouble? Are there any actions I can take? Would I be able to tell my boss I'm taking labor law action without being immediately terminated?
