My coworker told me my friend should just die instead of calling in sick.

I have a coworker who works two jobs at around 60-70 hours a week, we work together at a joint gas station restaurant. Today was the fourth of July, one of the busiest days of the summer for this small-town convenience store. My friend had given me a heads up the night before that, thanks to some medical complications, they wouldn't be coming in. I told them that it was cool, I've closed the store on my own before and I wanted them to ultimately be okay. For further clarification, that night they had left work early to go to the emergency room because they believed they had appendicitis. Along with general pain from hitting a deer. They are doing okay! But what actually came up is something semi-private that I will just say is debilitating enough to call in. So today, the coworker came in to fill in for…

So today, the coworker came in to fill in for my friend, and not long into the shift they struck up a LOVELY conversation that I will do my best to transcribe.

_________.

Coworker: [Friend] calls in for more days off than anyone else. I don't get it. They called in yesterday for hitting a fucking deer.

Me: You do realize that they had to go to the emergency room yesterday, right? Because they thought they had appendicitis?

Coworker: I don't care, how is them calling in fair to the people who have to fill in for them?

Me: …You do know the alternative to treating appendicitis is death right?

Coworker: I really don't care, honestly I don't care.

________.

This isn't the first time we've had a conversation like this. A couple weeks ago they told me it's stupid that power companies can't turn off the AC of homes in Arizona because “If they didn't want to die they should have paid their bills, I work and pay mine.”

I've informed my friend of what this coworker said about them because I was genuinely just disgusted by this. However, I want to know possible steps I should take if any.

Edit: weird bold formatting, sorry I'm on my phone at 3am
