So I’m a receptionist at a body shop in a dealership where I was originally hired to be the receptionist for the company. I was laid off due to COVID and rehired into the body shop department almost a year later. Might I just point out that I do hours of work for the administration department simply because I still knew how to and it has never been the responsibility of the body shop receptionist in the past.
Well I just hit my one year mark and minimum wage went up at the beginning of the year. I learned today that my employer does NOT give everyone wage adjustments for minimum wage going up, so the wage adjustment I got was documented as a raise because they decided I could have the adjustment.
My manager is new to his position and within 2 weeks of his promotion, spent hours on the clock purchasing a new car and has since refinanced his house, taking more time off and this past weekend bought a boat. I’ve got a ‘11 Focus that’s had constant, savings and paycheck draining issues and I can’t afford a car off my wage. It could literally die any day and I’ve had to take half days because of how distressed I’ve been over repairs on my car.
I asked my manager for a raise since I do more than anyone in my position has ever done and for a full time job, I do not live with much cushion in spending if that. I sell crochet pieces on the side in order to make ends meet.
He told me today he couldn’t get me a raise since I had just got one then he proceeded to take an early day leading into the weekend. I’ve decided I’m taking a 3 day weekend and calling in on Monday so they can see how much I actually do for them on a daily basis to try and get my manager to reconsider.
I’ve been so mad all evening I’ve been shaking since he told me this at work and I’m applying for jobs this weekend. I’m not going to be giving my job nearly as much effort as I have been because he’s proved I’m not worth it.
Fuck this system
