Why should I pickup work calls on my day off?

Rant. My supervisor tried calling me and left multiple messages urging me to call him back on my day off. This was to complain about not cleaning well during closing. Fortunately, I did not answer (mostly because I traveling with my family). Previously, they fired the janitors and forced the crew members/managers/kitchen to clean instead. I am not an on-call employee nor salaried. I work as a $17/hour assistant manager at a mid-tier restaurant but it feels like I am the cleaning staff, maintenance guy, tech support, cook, and accountant. Am I obligated to call back on my off day? Why should I even care about work during my time off? Edit: The store has high staff and management turnover. Most have only been there for one or two months (including myself) except the manager who has been there for 6 months.
