Someone told on me for taking home expired sandwiches

I saw a post the other day on here where someone got fired for eating expired food in their workplace, because they can’t afford to buy food. Well, in my workplace we have sandwiches, and when they go out of date by a day, we can’t give them to patients. I’ve been taking them home (lots of people do it too) because my parents like eating them at work, and then the other day my manager informed me that someone had let her know that I take them home and that I need to stop, the reason being that if I get food poisoning from the sandwich (expired by a day), it’ll be the workplace’s responsibility. It seems so silly. They’re just going to go in the bin anyway so why is it so bad that I take them home? Would it be really bad if I just continued taking…
