Is it reasonable to ask for a day off in these circumstances?

I've had my dog for about 13 years, a bit over half my life. Recently her health has been rapidly declining to the point where her kidneys are failing and she is unable to walk. My family has decided that it has come time for her to pass on. I have a shift later today around the time she is being taken to the vet. I called in asking if I could perhaps take the day off considering the situation. I've been told it's not possible and was “kindly” given an hour leeway after my shift begins to come in. I immediately started crying. It seems so unfair 🙁
