It’s never their fault the business is going under.

So for my job, I have to meet a large range of people every month, as my job is largely driven by commercial real estate transactions. This means I run the full range of terrible humans and property owners. Just yesterday I had an inspection at a mid range restaurant in a wealthy part of New England, and I was there because the business/property owner was selling the property because they were closing. The business owner had of course not told his employees yet that they were closing within the month, so I was ostensibly there as an “insurance inspector”, rather than as part of a real estate transaction.

During the inspection, they let slip that this was the fifth failed restaurant they have owned, and it's always because “no one wants to put in the work anymore.” This person was wearing designer clothes, had shown up in a pristine, newer model Porsche, and yet had a greasy, filthy restaurant.

Additionally, during the wrap up interview of the inspection, he talked about how “young people just don't get it, sometimes it feels like we should be allowed to beat anyone under 30 at work. I've thought about it just to prove a point”. He then went on a small rant about how it's his lazy employees that makes his businesses fail, and how there's never enough good workers to spread around. I'm assuming he felt comfortable dropping this because I look older than I am (thanks stress and baldness), but it was still a shock to hear it out loud, in front of his employees.

I do a fair amount of jobs exactly like this, and it always shocks me that these people will never take responsibility for living over their means, extending their credit and personal bills over the business to the point of going under (repeatedly), while putting ordinary workers under the bus and blaming them for getting crushed.
