had a convo with my manager that didn’t sit right with me.

there are a few things i should mention about my job before i explain what happened and ask for advice. i work at a very small health food store, getting $14/hr. that’s pretty low, but there are some good reasons i’ve has for staying at the job thus far. my manager is pretty lenient about my mental health problems and usually if i’m feeling depressed or just having a rough time with my BPD, she doesn’t give me a hard time about calling out. the job is also relatively low stress, except for the customers. usually we have no customers in the store and are generally not very busy, so there’s a lot of downtime that i usually spend reading books behind the register. my manager hasn’t told me not to read, but i can tell she doesn’t really approve even though there’s really not much to do when there’s…


there are a few things i should mention about my job before i explain what happened and ask for advice. i work at a very small health food store, getting $14/hr. that’s pretty low, but there are some good reasons i’ve has for staying at the job thus far. my manager is pretty lenient about my mental health problems and usually if i’m feeling depressed or just having a rough time with my BPD, she doesn’t give me a hard time about calling out. the job is also relatively low stress, except for the customers. usually we have no customers in the store and are generally not very busy, so there’s a lot of downtime that i usually spend reading books behind the register. my manager hasn’t told me not to read, but i can tell she doesn’t really approve even though there’s really not much to do when there’s no customers in the store. another reason i have stayed with this job is because i depend on the expired food we pull to survive. nobody in my household makes a lot of money and most of the food we eat is expired food i got for free from my job. if i didn’t have the option to bring expired food home for free, we wouldn’t have anything to eat. but my manager has been scheduling me for closing shifts a LOT lately even though when i first started working i explicitly stated i would only be able to work opening shifts. i dont mind doing closing shifts every so often, and i don’t even mind being scheduled for a closing shift once every week. i came in today and told my manager i need to be scheduled for less closing shifts because i’m extremely burnt out from doing nothing but closing shifts for the past few weeks. she said “well all you do is read, and it doesn’t seem like you wanna be here even when you do opening shifts anyway” and it just didn’t sit right with me. am i overreacting? i want to find a different job after our conversation but i’m scared i’m not gonna be able to even have any food in my house without all the expired food i bring home.
