Bit of background for those unfamiliar with My state follows US federal minimum wage ($7.25/hr), and for those unfamiliar with tipping structure, servers have an exception. Server's can be paid a base rate that is FAR below minimum wage, and it's expected that they at least make minimum when they account for their tips + base pay. If they don't make minimum wage by the end of the pay period with tips, they get paid minimum regardless.
Yesterday, I was interviewed for a server position at a Victorian era Italian Restaurant in the heart of Downtown, and offered a position. The restaurant is highly reputable, and from talking to the current employees and servers, I found that when the hiring manager said his servers very rarely make less than $20/hr, he wasn't kidding. I took the offer, and have orrientation/training on Monday.
While I was waiting on the manager to take me back for the interview, one of the employees said that she also works at a brand new restaurant 2 mins walk down the block. She suggested that if the interview doesn't doesn't well, I should apply there as they desperately need employees, seeing as though they just opened. Even after the interview at the Italian restaurant went well, I still went to the new place to apply, as I had nothing better to do, and figured I might be able to juggle two jobs, and I probably still can.
However the problem lies in the fact that it's a new restaurant. They have a VERY large amount of square footage, but hardly any customers. Today was my first day on the clock (applied yesterday), and in the 5 hours I've worked so far (10am-4pm), I've seen a total of one guest, and they didn't order food. They have a full kitchen staff complete with dishwashers, plus a licensed bartender, plus 2 or 3 people running the attached café, but no visible source of income. Even though it's my first day, a Wednesday lunch shift, etc., I want out. I want to be able to devote more hours and energy into my job at the Italian restaurant, because it's not sustainable for me to be putting in 6 hours a day 5 days a week IN ADDITION to whatever I'm scheduled at the Italian restaurant, if I'm only going to make minimum wage, especially since I didn't receive ANY tips. I feel having more scheduling availability for the Italian restaurant will be more valuable.
I need advice on how to quit a job that I've only worked for one shift, and less than 24 hours after the initial job offer. Should I stick it out until my first check? I don't mind if i dont get paid for the 6 hours of work that I did (will probably amount to about $35 dollars after tax), but how will that work when filing taxes at the end of the year, since I've submitted my documents already. Should I talk to the manager and see what they can do about making it so I never worked there?
