The Worst Job Interview

I had a very last minute interview yesterday with a Canadian women's clothing company and I couldn't believe their disgusting practices. Here is what I remember: -hair and makeup must be done and must fit the brand's image. Hair must be “professional” looking. -employees are to wear clothing only from the brand and this includes accessories and you must wear accessories. Employee discount is only 50% and to get an idea of how expensive clothes are at this brand, a sleeveless top is $60, a t-shirt is $80, sweatpants $80, a cardigan $200…you get the idea. -If you wear denim, it cannot be from other brands. It must be from their brand and not just that, but it must be from this current season (must still be sold in stores), it cannot be from previous seasons. If they require me to wear only their clothes, then it's a fucking uniform…

I had a very last minute interview yesterday with a Canadian women's clothing company and I couldn't believe their disgusting practices. Here is what I remember:

  • -hair and makeup must be done and must fit the brand's image. Hair must be “professional” looking.
  • -employees are to wear clothing only from the brand and this includes accessories and you must wear accessories. Employee discount is only 50% and to get an idea of how expensive clothes are at this brand, a sleeveless top is $60, a t-shirt is $80, sweatpants $80, a cardigan $200…you get the idea.
  • -If you wear denim, it cannot be from other brands. It must be from their brand and not just that, but it must be from this current season (must still be sold in stores), it cannot be from previous seasons.

If they require me to wear only their clothes, then it's a fucking uniform and unless you're giving me a 100% discount, don't expect me to wear it. And don't even get me started on the denim. Who can actually tell apart jeans? If the store sells blue jeans and I wear blue jeans, that should be enough. Not this whole “must be from the 2022 season” bullshit. How can you actually tell if this pair of jeans is from 2022 or 2021 without looking at my asscrack? And I doubt it's legal to ask to look down my ass.

Minimum wage, which I assume is what they want to pay me, is $15. How do they think I can afford to wear their overpriced clothing? I can barely live as it is and nearly cried when grocery shopping two weeks ago because I couldn't afford anything,

I also hate being required to wear makeup. There was a male employee there and he wasn't wearing makeup, why must I wear makeup just because I'm a female? For a company that is big on “female empowerment”, this sure is backwards. This company isn't even some high end company, it's a pretty average company trying to pretend to be higher end.

Bonus- Less disgusting but still stupid practices:

  • -2022 profits are based on 2019 numbers because that was the last year that stores were open full time. Stores are to make equal or more than 2019 profits.
  • -All stores, no matter location or size, have the same sales goal.
  • -no commissions but each sales associate has a sales goal they must meet. (In my experience, this does not exist – having an individual sales goal but no commission.)

I'm so fucking pissed. I'm desperate for a job, I'm about to be evicted after only ONE month of missing my rent and they know that people are desperate for any sort of income and I think they're taking advantage of that. I even lost money because of this stupid interview (bus fare). I'm not even picky, I just wanted a job so I can continue to live but this is the type of jobs out there right now. Fuck this I'm better off just not existing.
