Antiwork

Fired for being told to work at a sister location an hour away when I can’t even afford a car.

I’m so incredibly angry right now I’m fuming. I’ve been working at a local mom and pop store for close to a year now. Yesterday I was told that the sister location that’s an hour away is severely understaffed and I would need to work at that location until they can hire more staff. The problem is I barely make ends meet. I can’t afford a car between being a single mom and paying for rent/food/utilities/etc all on my own. I chose to work at my current location because it’s in walking distance to me so I’m able to walk to work every day. I tried to reason with my boss that there was no way I could do this but he just said to “get an uber then.” There’s no way I can afford an uber to and from work at that sister location. I looked up what the bus situation might be but it would take close to 2 hours to get to that sister location plus then that’s 2 extra hours to get home, no one would be home to watch my kids and then I’d have to pay for a babysitter which I just can’t afford. There was no winning for me in this situation so earlier today I showed up to my normal work location instead of the sister location and not too long after I got a text from my boss saying I was being let go because of “job abandonment” since I didn’t show up to the sister location. I can’t afford to not work, how am I going to keep food on the table and the lights on for me and my kids? I’m just so frustrated and scared right now I don’t know why so many people in management roles have zero human emotion.
