“Negotiating compensation would be unfair to those who don’t negotiate”

This happened a few years back. I interviewed at a tech startup where a friend already worked. Recruiter seems excited to try luring me in. They really talk about how much the company values diversity and inclusion. I tick several “diversity” boxes. At one point, the recruiter mentions that they offer nonnegotiable salaries. Oh? I ask why, since they're bragging about it. They say that they don't allow it because “negotiating compensation would be unfair to those who don't negotiate,” to paraphrase what I remember from the interview. They offer the same amount to everyone across the board, so they neatly avoid all bias. Right? Of course, they also don't disclose compensation up front. Startup rejects me and I take a competing offer. Later, I talk to my friend who already works there and share numbers. Surprise, surprise, they make 50% less than me despite having similar qualifications. Underpaying everyone…

Underpaying everyone equally doesn't make you inclusive, it just means you're taking advantage of people who don't know their own worth. Especially if you're luring in underrepresented people by pretending your workplace is a “safe” place to work.
