Covid has taught me just how much I love being able to work remotely. Or rather, it has taught me just how unnecessary going into the office every day is and how much I hated it.
The job I do can be handled 95% remotely but the company I work for has decided that all of us are no longer allowed to do remote work and we must all be on-site every day. We're allowed to do remote work after business hours and on the weekend of course (lucky us). So I've decided to start hunting for work that is 100% remote.
During my search I had an idea. It may not be the most original idea but it may go a long way towards helping me get ahead of my paycheck to paycheck lifestyle for a few months. What if, when I found a new position, I didn't quit my old one? Just never turn in my 2 weeks notice. There is relatively little oversite on where we are at any given time at my current job so I think I could get by for quite a while working both my old and new jobs before my current one finally catches on that I'm not coming on-site anymore. And after they discover that, I'll have another month or two of excuse making and pto taking before they finally drop the axe.
Is this a bad idea? The company I work for is a dime a dozen so burning this bridge won't have any affect on my ability to find work in the future. And the thought of doubling my paychecks for a few months is very enticing. My thought process is, they can fire me for any reason and can/have taken advantage of my time and financial needs for their own profit. I don't feel like I owe them anything, least of all an explanation that I have taken other work.
