Hi antiwork, I was wandering if you could make something clear for me. Over the weekend me and my family had a dinner and a topic of work, overtime and a road to success came up. Because I recently took my first corporate job there ware questions, like how long I work and am I committed. When I explained that I work 8h a day, have chill atmosphere and that l’am concerned they will make me come back to the office (1h one way commute), they scoffed. What followed was an hour long discussion, where I heard that they had to work (or still are) 12h a day, if you don’t give your all you will not advance, and that they if I don’t want to travel 1h by public transport I should finally do my driving license and just drive. And when I pointed out importance of work life balance I heard it’s something I should care about later in life, after getting good enough position. What was especially horrid for me, was that for all those hours they put in, they weren’t payed overtime. I also pointed out that my corporate overlords agree with me, because I presented same views in my work interview. Long story short after 30 min of back and forth (and some wine), I got a little pissed and called their attitude slavery with extra steps. In return they told me I have mentality of office cleaner and they I won’t advance with it. So I called them boomers (even tho some of them are millennials) and we decided to end this discussion. My question is, are they right in that you need to put extra work and your free time to advance in work?
