Limited work contract ending with no knowledge of being on a limited contract

I'm hoping someone can provide me with some information regarding being on a limited employment contract without the persons knowledge. My partner (non-binary) works for aep as a phone operator working under a contract through UNICON. They just had a meeting with they're aep manager who told them their contract is up in a month. He said they would extend it until October and possibly through the end of the year. Until today, they had not been told their contract had an end date. He then told them that they have to come up with a training document and train two new phone operators. Are we stupid for not knowing this contract would be limited? I'm hoping someone can provide me with some information regarding being on a limited employment contract without the persons knowledge. My partner (non-binary) works for aep as a phone operator working under a contract through UNICON. They just had a meeting with they're aep manager who told them their contract is up in a month. He said they would extend it until October and possibly through the end of the year. Until today, they had not been told their contract had an end date. He then told them that they have to come up with a training document and train two new phone operators. Are we stupid for not knowing this contract would be limited? Is it supposed to be common knowledge that working through a contractor would provide you with limited temporary work? We thought they had job security but they're gonna be dropped like it's nothing and we have no idea if unicon is going to get them a new contract once this one is up. Any information would be helpful we are scrambling trying to figure out what to do. We have been trying to find them a new job anyways because working through a contractor is terrible (no benefits, and now no job security) and this feels illegal. What actions should we take?

Edit: They found their contract and nowhere does it state that there is a term date or a date when this contract ends. Is their aep manager lying to fire them without repercussions?
