Just told off a recruiter

I have been out looking for work lately. There was a job opening for a bi-lingual receptionist at the local university. They needed someone who can speak English and either Arabic or Mandarin Chinese. I have experience living and working in China. I speak the language, I know the culture, and I am usually a bit of a novelty for most Chinese speakers because I don’t look like what they expect. They were offering a $250 finders fee for anyone that could come take the position (due to them being so desperate), but wouldn’t pay it to me or to a friend of the family that also thought I would be a good match for the job because they had “also contacted me directly.” -whatever, no biggie Then, they have me sign a bunch of contracts and stuff to get put into their “third party system” where they presumably work…

I have experience living and working in China. I speak the language, I know the culture, and I am usually a bit of a novelty for most Chinese speakers because I don’t look like what they expect.

They were offering a $250 finders fee for anyone that could come take the position (due to them being so desperate), but wouldn’t pay it to me or to a friend of the family that also thought I would be a good match for the job because they had “also contacted me directly.” -whatever, no biggie

Then, they have me sign a bunch of contracts and stuff to get put into their “third party system” where they presumably work with the university. In there, the obligatory “you aren’t allowed to sue us, arbitrary mediation clause” -hmmm…suspect, but whatever

We get to the background check portion: they want to confirm my work history and addresses for the last 5 years, or whatever. Like, “dude…you know I was in China, right? Most of my employers employed me to speak English for them, you are hiring me because you don’t speak Chinese…I foresee problems with this reference check…do you even know what WeChat is?”. Their background check system couldn’t even handle the input of Shanghai city in Shanghai municipal special district (kind of like DC). But, that doesn’t stop them from trying to scare me by threatening bullshit if I “dared lie to them.” -bullshit scare tactics, fuck off.

My last straw was when they asked me to sign a PPP loan application form on their behalf before even extending a job offer with the university. They are trying to use me to get government money before I have even stepped foot in the building.

Told them to remove me from consideration and to not use me to get free government money.

TLDR: Job was offering $17.50/hr for bilingual Chinese/English and was jerking me around with a bunch of bullshit. Told em’ to take a hike.
