First of all I’d like to say I agree with a lot of things posted here and I like getting to be a part of this even if it’s, currently, just from a spectator point of view.
Anyways on to the point of my post, I am supposed to be negotiating a raise with my boss in the next day or two but I’m not sure how to be more uncompromising as I usually am. I’m the shipping supervisor of a rather small business that makes between 1-3 million a month but I’m only paid $16/hour – which isn’t nearly a living wage where I am. I make commission in addition to this that brings me up to ~18-20 dollars an hour, dependent on the amount of money we make for the month. I feel that this is fair for the most part but for the amount of time, energy, and effort put in to doing my job correctly I feel that it isn’t on par and it really only brings my pay to bordering on poverty wages. I really appreciate my boss because I have been allowed to grow in different professional aspects during my time with the company so I don’t like to be demanding when it comes time for raises but since this is a ‘one off’ raise I want to voice my point of view clearly so I can get what I want or confirm that I should keep searching for employment that will value me properly elsewhere. I’m planning on asking for a $2-3 dollar raise (in the form of a wage increase or a commission increase) and an additional amount of PTO. If anyone has some advice on how to handle this kind of discussion, I’d be happy to hear it. If my conversation doesn’t go my way then I’ll be ready to move on to other options of employment, considering the work environment, but what I do isn’t very difficult so I wouldn’t mind sticking around.
I appreciate any responses and I hope you have a wonderful week!
