A few months ago I left a job of ten years. The micro managing had gotten severe. A few co-workers were constant back stabbers/rats/suck up to the owner, lying douche bags. Outside of that I liked it but it took its toll after a decade. We stay in jobs because either we have to or we just get comfortable and/or scared.
I have been in the same Industrial hose and fittings industry for 20 years. I'm 44. Staying in that industry has made it so I can at least make a living wage without college (I have high school and 2 years community college which is meaningless). I recently started a new job in an office, which is supposed to lead to outside sales. Same industry. Day one, the manager who is training me is bad mouthing the other sales person. Micromanaging his paperwork. She even went as far as digging up his last months sales to show me, which were bad, but he's fairly new as well. This seems all too familiar. She lives in a small town and talks about her big house. I ask her how she likes the town. She says she loves it… there's no East Indians. I immediately think about leaving. Next day I'm hanging with the 3 shop guys. They start shit talking East Indians. They're shit talking Chinese. Little while later I'm talking to a customer. He starts in on the Freedom Convoy (I'm in Canada)… says he doesn't see why people hate them, look at BLM going crazy over a cop kneeling on a black guy…
I used to run a busy industrial parts counter, so over the years, especially since Trump, I've heard it. I've argued with them. Called them out. I'm a middle aged white guy but I've always been open minded, progressive, all that, I have zero time for that bs. But to hear this shit day one, from management, and then from customers and more co-workers, and day one backstabbing. Damn, I regret leaving my last job. How fucked is that? How many jobs will I have before I find a nice environment. My friends (the “nobody wants to work” types) tell me I have to change my view on people and suck it up. It's the way it is…… I really really hope they are wrong. At this point I just want to be a courier driver and get away from the 9-5 politics. Office culture (no not all the same) seems nuts to me now. I can see why so many are happy to be WFH. This new job, I'm staying until March 1st to get my pay deposit, and I'll be out. Probably just do temp agency warehouse work for a bit.
