*This is more of a hypothetical question.
I (20f) recently got my first full time job as an admin at an insurance general agency. It is a small company with only about 10 employees. The work environment is laid back and I overall love it.
Today we have one of our representatives from an insurance agency coming in today to meet all of us. This person is the top representative that we do most of our business with, so it is important for us to be dressed up and super professional etc etc..
I am “hourly” technically. I don’t clock in or clock out but I get paid for exactly 40 hours per week. Everyday I get a 30 minute unpaid lunch. Like most businesses, this is 30 minutes I can literally do what I want as long as I’m back on time.
Today, the company this representative works for is providing food to the office and eating with this representative. It’s being called a “lunch and learn.” So I’m wondering. Shouldn’t I still get a 30 minute unpaid lunch AFTER this luncheon? Yes we are eating, but this is still working. I know we are expected to go back to work after the fact, but it seems like I should still get those 30 minutes considering it will still be recorded that I had an unpaid lunch on my paycheck.
What are y’all’s opinions on the matter?
Edit: In my state, companies are not required to offer employees any breaks.
TLDR; My company is having all employees do a “lunch and learn” with a business partner. Although we are eating, I feel like I still should get my 30 mins unpaid lunch after considering it still shows on payroll that I took 30 mins off. Opinions?
