Hiring Question

So I applied to be an assistant manager in retail. I know someone at the store I used as a referral and I got the email today that they will be interviewing me for that position. The person I know at the store said the GM will likely offer a lower level position because they are at capacity for that position I applied for. So would it be professionally inappropriate for her to interview me for that position just to offer me a lower position with 20% less pay? When the email specifically says she'll be interviewing for that position? I'm more interested in a higher position to get more experience in management. And plus I really need the higher pay that comes with the position. I've dealt with the worst in retail like stuff that would be on YouTube bad. And this store supposedly is way more laid back…
