I’m 5-10 minutes late for work almost every day and I’m scared of getting fired

I drive 45 minutes to get to work every morning. I always leave at the same time, sometimes I get to work on time but other times there’s terrible traffic and I get stuck. According to the GPS, it always says I’ll get there on time when I’m leaving my house, so it can be hard for me to plan how early to leave. I want to note- being late has never impacted my work quality or how much work I complete. If I’m late, I work late to compensate for it, even if it’s just a few minutes. I work hard and I often have to work through my lunch break because of the amount of work I have to complete and the strict deadlines. I do so without complaint. I want to note- being late has never impacted my work quality or how much work I complete. If I’m late, I work late to compensate for it, even if it’s just a few minutes. I work hard and I often have to work through my lunch break because of the amount of work I have to complete and the strict deadlines. I do so without complaint.

They just placed my coworker on an unpaid leave for multiple days because he was late too many times. Now he’s worried about being able to pay his rent. If he’s late again, they’ll fire him.

It’s so frustrating to me that we work so hard and get everything done, and yet we can still be punished harshly for being a few minutes late. I know it’s “setting an example” for everyone else, but people from other departments show up 20-40 minutes late multiple days a week and nothing happens to them. Even my boss and her boss show up late and leave early, and they never get in trouble. My boss also gets to work from home full time, so she doesn’t have a commute at all, and yet she has repeatedly denied us the ability to work from home like she does.

I know I should just leave super early and get my shit together, I just want to vent because this feels stupid and unfair. I hate working in such a strict environment, but this is the most money I’ve ever made.
