I was told today, after previously seeing a presentation of an org chart from my boss’ boss with my name in a certain role, that not only were they not going to create that role right now, if they did create that role in the future – it would be an open application for the position. It was at that moment that I realized my company and I are misaligned on the value I provide the organization.
See the role they were talking about, I view as a lateral move – because I’ve been doing my boss’ job for 3 years now. Now though – we are going to have discussions about “development opportunities” that they don’t yet have concrete examples of, to provide me the experience needed to do the job, I already think I’m doing.
Now I’m a bit triggered surely; but I also have a right as a human to see if other companies value my experience higher. Maybe they do, maybe they don’t.
But I am tired of this organizations excuses.
“We can’t create this role right now, and you’d have to apply for it anyway”
“You’re a high performer, but even though inflation is 8%, we can only give you a 2% raise”
“We are prioritizing our people. We think they provide us the competitive advantage”.
You know what, I’m tired. It’s all bs. They can recognize the value I provide, or I am empowered to find someone else who will.
