Firstly, I was very unlucky. For some reason the universe willed it that I had to deal with a young resident that had died from a suspected morphine overdose in my final week for a company I had been with for four and a half years. He looked very dead despite never having seen a dead body before and I was still instructed by the emergency dispatcher to conduct CPR on him. I'd known him for a year and a half running up to that point. There were multiple red flags running up to his death including him being offered an ambulance the night before by a colleague because of his intoxicated state. My friend/colleague is devastated with the guilt. They were very little safeguards to prevent the flow of drugs into the residential building where I worked. He was caught by night staff the morning before with two 500ml bottles of morphine which is enough to kill more than a handful of people but that night staff member was either negligent or felt powerless to intervene. Its likely the resident was not checked on for 12 hours the night he died.
I was more angry and uncertain by what happened. My manager didn't offer me a debrief which is meant to be standard practice in the care industry following a traumatic event. Instead he gave me phone numbers for two counselling services even thought I quickly overcame the trauma in the weeks that followed. I argued with him over possible negligence on the company's part and he advised I take the rest of the week off ( I came in on my last day to say goodbye to everyone).
There are systemic issues around drug-use and safeguards in the care industry in the UK but this company is particular is corrupt largely for profit reasons as well as nepotism but I dont expect any of you reading to be surprised to hear this on here. Nor should I be surprised by this £100 reduction for leave I was advised by my Manager to take-off but it still reads as a fuck you by a company that is meant to “care”. Four and a half years I put in for them.
