Do you actually work 40 hours?

Does everyone actually do 40 hours of solid work a week? I find it hard to focus and work for 8h straight a day. It feels like I do a task then I need a 10-20 min break. But my gf and my work friend are overworked constantly. Gf puts in actual 40 solid hours of work in 50 actual hours a week (she keeps a timesheet) and doesn't stop until she gets those 8 hours worth of tasks per day. And my friend puts in 11 hours every day. Both say that otherwise they feel like they are overpaid and steal company time and won't be up for a promotion or a raise. I can't say that I'm a bad performer, I'm just a decent performer and get good assessment feedback and get most of my work done. But there's always more work and I just can't bring myself to doing it. And I'm surrounded by exceptional performers. It feels like “ok” work is now bad work and “great” work is the new “ok” work. I just can't keep up, feel ashamed and thinking of quitting and joining a blue or pink collar job where things would be more clear. Where there is no good work – bad work. Just work and paycheck.

So tell me your story what motivates you to put in your full 40 or more hours. Or why you don't.
