Tell me you didn’t get the job, without telling me you didn’t get the job.

After requesting an update from HR for an internal job that I applied to, received the information that the position is being reposted to bring in more external candidates. I've already gone through the entire interview process. Sooooo… What's going on here? Am I just being strung along in case they don't find someone they like better?
