Not sure if it's ironic or meta that I'm posting in anti-work while unemployed.
Currently looking for entry level factory/warehouse work because I lost my career to sleep apnea and me being unable to adapt to the treatment. I have 30+ unsolicited offers for a career that I can no longer legally participate in. Not one single reply from the entry-level gigs I've applied to or requested more info on.
My last two jobs were industry-adjacent. I'm a former truck driver and last two jobs were spotting trailers on company property. Significantly less pay for more work. Quit each of them because they knew I was bent over a barrel and tried to work me like a dog. One was 11 hour days 5 days a week. They actually called Saturdays a “half-day” despite being 6 hours. 61 hours a week at $16/hour for skilled labor. The next job took the dumbest possible approach in an effort to keep drivers. As the spotter, I was responsible for everything including fueling and pre-trip inspections. They didn't even teach their drivers how to fuel their own damn trucks and it was on me if they ran out of fuel. Then again, one of their drivers has been shot and several more mugged because of the nature of their jobs. Their solution is to tell drivers to keep a fake wallet. They have problems all over their corporate set up.
So because I don't want surgery for the apnea, and can't sleep with the mask, I've been suffering two years of depression and been unable to keep a job for a full year. Seems like the only options are to completely start over at nearly 40 with tens of thousands in student debt to get a career I probably will find intolerable. That or keep working bullshit jobs until I can lose enough weight to get back to a career that was yanked out from under me for an 8% more likely chance of driving while drowsy.
Fuck corporate America.
