I recently talked to an American friend, she is learning portuguese, and would like to come to brazil to stay for 6 months of vacation because the cost of living here would be low. but cannot due to the fact that she has to pay a student debt. she told me that she had graduated after 5 years with a debt of 40k US$, she said they can never pay this debt, except in rare cases. It all goes to the (extremely high) interest. There are people who take years to paying and the debt is greater than when it started.
