profits are soaring for many businesses and so is the inflation rate. yet job openings aren’t being filled because companies don’t want to pay workers a living wage, or even market rate at times AND there are fewer available workers. (reminder that more than a million people have died from COVID in the U.S. thanks to lackadaisical public health.)
this isn’t a case of “no one wants to work.” employers are purposely paying their workers depressed wages. many of them absolutely can afford to pay their workers more, and it would mean lowering CEO & leadership salary. god forbid they should have to live more like the rest of us. i was laid off during the pandemic because of the pandemic and it took me a long time to find a job that would let me safely work from
home. i was fortunate that i had time to find one. i know not everyone is in this situation. i’m hoping enough people are that it will change things.
they’re trying to make it impossible for us to afford to live without working in life-threatening conditions. if they make it impossible for us to afford food, they’ll fucking find out. i don’t want to get to that place, and if we do, rich people in the US are going to find out like the French did in the 19th century.
